I ordered a bundle of fabric from Pink Chalk Fabrics and drew a small Modern Chevron Baby Quilt pattern that incorporated all the colours.
To fit the pattern into the block sizing guidelines I needed 1 inch finished squares and half square triangles (HSTs). This made me hyperventilate a little until I remembered Elizabeth Hartman's postage stamp tutorial.
I gave it a whirl; it took a while but all came together quite well.
QuiltCon block submissions are meant to reflect what modern quilting means to you.
I love me some colour gradations, so I was happy I had some of that action going on in the block (albeit very pixilated).
I love coming up with tutorials and the Modern Chevron quilt has been my second most popular one to date (after the bunting lantern) so it felt right to use that pattern.
Another awesome aspect of modern quilting to me is the online community, both the interaction and the information available. Using Elizabeth's tutorial to help me make the block was the internet sprinkles on my quilt-block cake.
Modern quilters, I think, are busy people. I'm busy too. I came to the realisation that if I was going to make a dent in my 'to do' list, I needed to let go of my love for perfection. Sometimes it's okay to leave a slight boo-boo in place rather than spend 2 hrs unpicking and redoing. It's wonderful for your sanity too.
With this in mind I'd like to point out that my block isn't perfect AND I DON'T EVEN CARE. NOT ONE BIT. Nope. No way. Not at all. Not thinking about those points and how I could just whip them out and do a few new HSTs and... Alright, so I've learnt to let go but haven't quite learned how to embrace it. I'm working on it.
It's a great challenge (I love working within parameters, sometimes free reign gives me a choice migraine) and really love the way it turned out. I hope it makes it to the US in one piece (s'il te plait, La Poste?)
Are any of you quilty peeps sending a block into the QuiltCon Block Challenge?

I think your submission is brilliant. I am contemplating making a few blocks to send in, too, but I have not made anything yet.
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing piece of modern quilty art Kirsty! Good luck on its journey! I'll be looking out for it in the finals!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! Mix orange with blue in anything and I'm there!
ReplyDeleteYour Friend, m.
I love the mix of colors! I made your Modern Chevron Baby Quilt using the orange/neutral pattern and love it. I wondered what it would look like in other color combinations! There's something about the symmetry and the movement in it that really speaks to me. Thank you for your creativity and your generosity in sharing with your patterns and tutorials.
ReplyDeleteYay, I love hearing that others have made the pattern. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOh! Letting go of perfectionism is sooo hard but liberating when you manage to do it. I feel your pain, but love how this quilt turned out. I have a stack of fabric ready to go for my chevron quilt. Just. Need. Time. To. Get. It. Started!!! Also I love the two photos of the back of the patchwork. You could hang that first one as art in its own right. Bon Weekend!
ReplyDeleteVery nice block. I was just about to start a project using that Postage Stamp tutorial so I'm glad to see someone else has tried it.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous block! Fingers crossed for you so that it arrives in good order.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm working on letting go of perfectionism too... easier said than done. ;o) However, I found a lovely quote to help me keep it all in perspective while making me smile...
"Perfect is the opposite of being done."
Looks beautiful! Your quilting constantly inspires me to try the same designs in crochet and knitting...thus far, no luck, but I sure hope I can put something together that's as lovely as this!
ReplyDeleteNow that would be very cool, seeing this pattern in yarn. I hope you get around to it sometime!
DeleteOooh love this, but feel totally inadequate now that you have made two and I'm still slogging away at my first one. I used Elizabeth's postage stamp tutorial, it's great isn't it, so much easier to get much more accurate piecing, especially on teeny tiny squares. Good luck, I'll be keeping an eye out for it too.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea, it looks great too! Good luck :o)
ReplyDeleteIt's so lovely----as is your blog : )
ReplyDeleteI lovedthebig one and this is his little brother: love him too!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love it! The itty-bitty pieces and the colours and mix of bright with charcoal and grey! I'm crossing my fingers for you both for the competition and La Poste!
ReplyDeleteHave enjoyed looking around your blog - I love your modern quilt and all the more cos it has a little human imperfection in it - that's what makes handmade handmade! Loved seeing Amiens again - we were there this time last year - so you brought back some memories. xCathy
ReplyDeleteOoh, aah, you inspire me! I said it on flickr I say it here this is beautiful! I love the internet because we can see and write all over the world. I am following you by email to see what you do next! Gotta work on my own submission! I got my fabric same place you did and was checking who used all the colors, so I will too.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great.
ReplyDeleteYou've done an amazing block for the challenge, congratulations!!! It absolutely embodies modern quilting for me, I hope the committee feels the same way and chooses it!
ReplyDeleteWow Kirsty. This has great effect. Congratulations . . . so perfect in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteThat is truly, truly stunning. Looks damn perfect to me!
ReplyDeleteSo, so lovely! Good luck with the submission - i am rooting for you!
ReplyDeleteCan I say, holy crapola. This block is AWESOME and I LOVE IT! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWow - I would pick your block right off the bat if I were a judge - it is amazing. I'm sending three and happy to be part of the fun and charity project.
ReplyDeleteyou are a true quilt master Kirsty! This piece is phenomenal - and I only wish my quilt had as less off-points as this one...
