I ordered a bundle of fabric from Pink Chalk Fabrics and drew a small Modern Chevron Baby Quilt pattern that incorporated all the colours.
To fit the pattern into the block sizing guidelines I needed 1 inch finished squares and half square triangles (HSTs). This made me hyperventilate a little until I remembered Elizabeth Hartman's postage stamp tutorial.
I gave it a whirl; it took a while but all came together quite well.
QuiltCon block submissions are meant to reflect what modern quilting means to you.
I love me some colour gradations, so I was happy I had some of that action going on in the block (albeit very pixilated).
I love coming up with tutorials and the Modern Chevron quilt has been my second most popular one to date (after the bunting lantern) so it felt right to use that pattern.
Another awesome aspect of modern quilting to me is the online community, both the interaction and the information available. Using Elizabeth's tutorial to help me make the block was the internet sprinkles on my quilt-block cake.
Modern quilters, I think, are busy people. I'm busy too. I came to the realisation that if I was going to make a dent in my 'to do' list, I needed to let go of my love for perfection. Sometimes it's okay to leave a slight boo-boo in place rather than spend 2 hrs unpicking and redoing. It's wonderful for your sanity too.
With this in mind I'd like to point out that my block isn't perfect AND I DON'T EVEN CARE. NOT ONE BIT. Nope. No way. Not at all. Not thinking about those points and how I could just whip them out and do a few new HSTs and... Alright, so I've learnt to let go but haven't quite learned how to embrace it. I'm working on it.
It's a great challenge (I love working within parameters, sometimes free reign gives me a choice migraine) and really love the way it turned out. I hope it makes it to the US in one piece (s'il te plait, La Poste?)

I think your submission is brilliant. I am contemplating making a few blocks to send in, too, but I have not made anything yet.

I love the mix of colors! I made your Modern Chevron Baby Quilt using the orange/neutral pattern and love it. I wondered what it would look like in other color combinations! There's something about the symmetry and the movement in it that really speaks to me. Thank you for your creativity and your generosity in sharing with your patterns and tutorials.

ReplyDeleteOh! Letting go of perfectionism is sooo hard but liberating when you manage to do it. I feel your pain, but love how this quilt turned out. I have a stack of fabric ready to go for my chevron quilt. Just. Need. Time. To. Get. It. Started!!! Also I love the two photos of the back of the patchwork. You could hang that first one as art in its own right. Bon Weekend!

ReplyDeleteWell, I'm working on letting go of perfectionism too... easier said than done. ;o) However, I found a lovely quote to help me keep it all in perspective while making me smile...

Looks beautiful! Your quilting constantly inspires me to try the same designs in crochet and knitting...thus far, no luck, but I sure hope I can put something together that's as lovely as this!

DeleteOooh love this, but feel totally inadequate now that you have made two and I'm still slogging away at my first one. I used Elizabeth's postage stamp tutorial, it's great isn't it, so much easier to get much more accurate piecing, especially on teeny tiny squares. Good luck, I'll be keeping an eye out for it too.
