A simple log cabin baby quilt.
Here’s a recent finish for another baby born a few months ago now.
The quilt was inspired by the colours in backing material, a gift from Diana.
The squares were made from a variety of single colour prints in my stash, teamed with Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in Coral and Hot Pink. I also used some Kona Orange and plenty of White.
The centre squares are 4.5″ (finished 4″) and the borders around them are 2.5″ thick (finishing at 2″).
I quilted with three different colours of thread using the seams as guide lines. I was going to go random but ended up maintaining the same colour for each seam-set (ie inner square, inner border strips, outer border strips).
At first I thought I’d made a big mistake and should of gone with white thread, but the mister convinced me to stick with the colours. I think he’s right.
It’s a bit hard to differential between the colours above so here they are:
And the binding is Henna Garden in Brown.
Appliqué again, this time just the first letter of the little girl’s name:
Final measurements: 40″ square.
Sometimes a simple log cabin quilt is all you need to make a beautiful handmade baby gift.
Hello, I love your blog and wanted to let you know I’ve passed on a Liebster blog award. You can pop over to my blog and pick it up if you want, but I’ll understand if you’ve got your hands full!
lucky little m, it’s gorgeous. love to you and the bun
Brown is not a colour I am drawn to, but your fabric choices are wonderful as usual. I love the use of brown in this quilt, and everything else about the quilt too. Baby can’t be far away, so good luck with everything.
Love the different coloured threads, and they are such pretty colours. The appliqued M is so cute. Love the whole design of your quilt, and those colours are just gorgeous. Lucky baby M.
The coloured thread is a great design element. Love the modern design and colours.
The quilt is Beautiful! Wishing you all the best for the arrival of your new babe. from Jenny McH
Love it! Glad you went for it and used different colours for the quilting, it adds to the beauty of the quilt. What a perfect baby gift!
Wow Kirsty, it is a true beauty. I love the colors and again the design! Perfect to my eyes. Not too girly, but fresh enough for a baby.
And… I love to find out that my husband is not the only one that gives good advice on craftprojects. How painfully right he is sometimes, ouch :-).
Good luck with your last days as a pregnant lady! I am sending you good vibes and health for the coming days. And hope the weather is getting a little cooler for you, we have rain here. Not that I would prefer that, but at least it is cooler now, haha.
Love, Maaike
Beautiful! I really like the contrast of the quilting thread and the backing is just gorgeous! Very, very nice.
I really love the colored thread against the white! That’s the first thing I noticed and liked about the quilt. Love all the prints and your binding is perfect!
Jennifer :)
I know I still owe you an email, but just quickly, I love how you’ve done this quilt. Great idea to use different colours in the quilting too. And as usual all perfectly straight lines!! How do you do it?? Lucky baby M.
