If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that this weekend I visited the 2015 Modern Quilt Show in Kiama, Australia. This Show was hosted by the Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild.
I attended on the Saturday and had a brilliant time.
Hard not to have fun when this is what I saw when I walked in the front door of the Kiama Pavilion:
Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession
Yes, I was ‘that person’ who asked for a photo. Fangirl moment.
The Show was a very nicely curated display of modern quilting today. Nearly every technique you could think of (patchwork, whole cloth, hand sewing, machine sewing, EPP, appliqué, hand quilting, machine quilting) was represented in quilts of varying sizes made by men, women and children of all ages.
I had two quilts hanging, which was fun to see. Diamonds in the Deep was in good company, with a Gypsy Wife (by Cath Mosely) on one side:
And Kristy and Molli Sparkles‘ quilts on the other:
You can purchase a PDF copy of the quilt pattern for Diamonds in the Deep here.
Here’s a very rushed photo of young Molli with his creation (and his prize for winning first place in the minimalistic design category).
Let’s get on to some eye-candy, shall we? Don’t forget you’ll find more photos on the Show’s instagram hashtag (#modernquiltshowau).

If you’ve made it this far, then well done you! I’ll leave you alone now with a few parting shots of Kiama, which is a pretty little historical seaside town, worthy of visiting (quilt show or not). Thanks Kiama and thank you Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild!
What beautiful quilts and a quaint town, too. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us with these images.
What a fantastic show! Your quilts look lovely hanging in the photos! Thanks for all of the inspiration. I’m curious — the quilt with the clamshells — is that some kind of a black trim that is used on all of the raw edges? I’m also in love with the Frida quilt, and your photo of the rainbow quilt is pure perfection the way it leaves focus in the distance. As always, well done! You are a gem!
Thanks for sharing the quilts from this show. Great to see what people are doing in other countries.
It was great to meet you at the show. Gorgeous round up and thanks for sharing my quilt xx
Great post! And such beautiful photos!
Oh wow, there are some amazing quilts there. But honest injun … I like your two best, and Molli’s, that’s ace too :)
Thanks for the awesome recap – now I don’t feel as bad for not being able to make it. You take a beautiful photo! (Totally envious!)
Wonderful show, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the great shots of these quilts. Superb photography as always.
Looks like a great time. Your quilts look beautiful and remind me I have your pattern to make!
Might I please use your photo of Modern Stitched for a presentation I’ll giving at my local guild to illustrate features of modern quilting? I will attribute Liesel (for the quilt) and you (for the photography).
Loved seeing all the amazing quilts. But…I didn’t see a pic of a chandelier!
Great pics Kirsty, so wish I could have made it down!!! My hexagon quilt is called “Around Jake’s Rainbow”. Congrats on the judges commendation on your Diamonds!!!!
Thanks so much for posting your photos. So wish I could have gone.
It looks like you had a fun and exciting time Kirsty! Thanks for sharing all the beautiful quilts too! It’s lovely to see some old favourites there along with some new-to-me ones too!
Great event! Beautiful and inspiring quilts :)
Greetings from Poland
