Chain Piecing

Here’s a quick how-to on chain-piecing your log cabin quilt blocks. This order of sewing log cabin blocks is known as the Courthouse Steps style. Here we go:

Take the centre squares and the strips for the first (innermost) log layer. Sew all of the centres along one of the strips:

After carefully cutting the blocks apart, press the seams either to one side (speedier pressing) or open (less bulk when quilting). Then chain piece the opposite side of the centres to a light fabric strip as well:

Once clipped apart and pressed, the blocks are ready to have another side added:

And now the final side of the first ring of logs can be sewn on:

And continue on in this vein until all the log rings have been joined to form the complete blocks.

After a final press, trim the blocks to the required size.
