Floral Irish Chain Quilt Pattern

Hello, hello and welcome to the weekend update from Bonjour Quilts. Read on for all the news!

A New Quilt Pattern – Floral Irish Chain

I’m excited to show you a new quilt pattern today, called Floral Irish Chain.

The Floral Irish Chain quilt pattern by Bonjour Quilts. This pattern has instructions for 3 quilt sizes: throw, twin and queen. This twin version has been sewn in sage greens with lilac, mauve and pink flowers.

For those looking for some nostalgia, this pattern will fit the bill. The classic Irish Chain pattern has been given a tweak with the addition of some pretty floral focal blocks.

My Floral Irish Chain Quilt

The version you see here today is the twin size, sewn in sage greens, with pink, mauve and lilac flowers. The flower centres are a maroon/purple grunge-style print.

I had a great time shopping for all the F8s I used to sew the flowers – although the pattern has directions for sewing them all from yardage too.

I sent my Floral Irish Chain away to Jos of Free Style Quilts (here on the Sunshine Coast, Australia), who did a great job long-arm quilting a sweet daisy design for me.

For the backing I chose a purple floral patterned fabric:

And my binding was more of the dark sage fabric I used for the Irish Chain.

I’m so happy with how it turned out. Perfect for anyone wanting a cosy, traditional-style quilt for their bedroom, which is quite on trend at the moment.

Floral Irish Chain Quilt Pattern Details

The Floral Irish Chain quilt pattern comes with instructions for 3 quilt sizes:

  • Throw: 70½” x 70½”
  • Twin: 70½” x 90½”
  • Queen: 90½” x 90½”

As I mentioned above, it has fabric requirements for F8s or yardage for the flowers. It is also very easy to make the flowers from scraps. I think a rainbow flower version on a neutral background would be pretty exciting!

Here’s a mock up of a queen size, dark quilt with a lighter Irish Chain. The flowers and centres are all light, and matching.

This next mock-up (throw size) has a the Irish Chain darker than the background fabric, and light flowers again.

How about some 2-colour quilts?

Simple and sweet, this is the throw size in light teal (dark aqua?) and white.

Here’s the same quilt, but with a darker teal added only in the flower centres and the binding.

How about the inverse, with the background dark and the flowers/chain in white? I think this looks very dramatic. This flat, dark blue, somewhere between navy and charcoal, is one of my favourites.

I couldn’t resist adding just a pop of colour. This hint of cherry red (a blue-red, rather than an orange-red) really adds some pizzazz.

So – lots of entertainment to be had with this pattern as you play with your fabrics.

One other idea I had was that you could actually swap out the floral block for any other block of the same size. That could be great fun too!

If you’d like your own copy of the Floral Irish Chain Quilt Pattern you can find it in the Bonjour Quilts Pattern Shop.

How about a bit of a sale for the weekend? Pop in the code IRISH and you’ll get the pattern for US$10. ✨

Happy sewing!

Chez Bonjour

We’re trying hard to settle back into a routine now that the school holidays are over. This is the last term of the school year for us here in Australia, full of end-of-year exams, sports finals and concerts that make it really hard to find a routine!

But Spring is well-sprung, so we’ve been enjoying the warm weather and everything in bloom.

The magpies are swooping now, protecting their nests. Let me tell you nothing makes you feel more alive that being swooped by a cute feathered critter intent on murdering you.

Speaking of cute critters, here are some photos of our resident cuties, to close out this newsletter.

Have a wonderful weekend

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Enjoy some sunshine, love on your pets. Maybe buy a new quilt pattern? Above all, rest and recharge, because another week will be here before we know it.

Until next time, happy sewing,

P.S. One more Floral Irish Chain: Rainbow! Can you imagine those flowers made in ditsy Liberty prints? ❤️

  1. It’s so nice that you post all those imaginings on the same pattern. So many possibilities! It’s hard to imagine spring here. We’re in the deep throes of fall, but I love the leaf changes!

    • Hi Angela, yes it’s always fun to see how different a pattern can look when using different fabrics.

Enjoy the fall – scarves and boots and chai lattes sounds good to me!
