Hello Hearts! Quilt Pattern – baby quilt
Let’s take a closer look at the baby size version I recently sewed up.
Fabrics
This baby quilt was sewn with four different solid fabrics in shades of pink, from bubblegum pink to deep magenta.
The background fabric is a lovely low volume fabric by Australian fabric company Devonstone, called Crossroads in Smoke. (Quilt shops, you can source all the fabulous Devonstone Collections at Two Green Zebras.)
Quilting
Given the angular outline of the heart blocks, I wanted a quilting pattern with some curves.
I decided to go with organic wavy quilting lines, sewn with my walking foot. I sewed my first wavy line straight down the middle, and then worked my way out to the edges with lines about 3 inches apart. Once all the quilt was secured, I then went back and put another line of quilting between them.
I’m happy with how the quilting turned out – very soft, flowing and romantic. Perfect for a heart quilt pattern.
Binding and Backing:
My backing was pieced with some large offcuts of three floral fabrics that I had in my stash.
For binding I would have loved a black and white striped fabric, but alas I had none at hand. Fortunately I had something close, an older black and white print by Sarah Golden called Tulips in Noir. The tulips remind me of cat silhouettes.
I used the glue basting technique to hold my binding in place before I machine sewed it down. After sewing the binding to the quilt, I flipped it over to the other side and used a very thin line of glue to secure it in place. Setting the glue with the iron gives it a good hold and also makes sure there’s no wet glue to stick to your sewing machine needle.
Once the whole binding was glued it was quick and easy to machine finish the binding. It didn’t move an inch. As the glue is water based, it will come out in the wash.
Colour in sheets
If you like to experiment with your fabrics before you sew them together, this pattern has printable colouring sheets for each quilt size. You can print them out and test your colour ideas to your heart’s content!
If you’d like to sew your own Hello Hearts! quilt, you can find the pattern in my shop here.
