Weekend Sewing: a New Quilt, Bear Paw Quilt Blocks and a Cat or Two

Welcome to the weekend, my friends! Here’s what’s happening in my neck of the woods, here at Bonjour Quilts.

    What I’m Sewing…

My citron fabric order arrived at the end of last week and I was very happy to see its yellow-green goodness. I’m very keen to finish off the citron/teal quilt I’m working on with these fabrics (you can see the design and initial quilt blocks in this post).

While I waited for this fabric last week, I mentioned I started working on some Bottomless Bear Paw quilt blocks for a new scrappy quilt.

I had a great time going though my scrap bags, sorting and ironing fabric. It was fun to realise I had quite a bit of fabric and that I might be able to eke out a whole blue/green scrappy quilt, without needing to add more colours. (Besides the popping hot pink paw pads.)

Then I pulled out all my low volume scraps, orphan layer cake squares and odd-shaped FQ remnants. Before I knew it I had lots of blocks cut out – little pieces of fabric everywhere! It’s currently a very busy cutting table.

Of course, the cutting goes a lot quicker than the sewing. Now I have to work through sewing all these blocks together so I can clear some space for the citron quilt.

I wish I’d had enough fabric to fussy cut this skull as a diamond, rather than a square. Luckily I had enough fabric to cut several of the ornate diamonds you seen below.

I’m looking forward to seeing this scrappy quilt come together.

    Around the Interwebs…

Here’s a link to another new blog post by me! This post shows you my Layer Cake Lily quilt, sewn in Ruby Star Society prints. The quilt pattern will soon be available for free on the Fat Quarter Shop blog (should be out early this week coming – I’ll be sure to link up to it next week). In the meantime, come over to my blog post to see the version I sewed up!

The colourful fabrics are from Rashida's Pixel and Pivot fabric lines. The quilt pattern is the Layer Cake Lily quilt by the Fat Quarter Shop. This version was made by Kirsty of Bonjour Quilts.

This artist creates some beautiful work with embroidery, beads and scrap fabric.

If you love colour and texture then this artist’s work will make you smile.

Loving the bright and joyful work of this painter. ❤️

Do you have a tattoo? I don’t, but sometimes I think about it. It’s just so hard to decide on something that’ll be with me for life (my husband is giving me side eye right now). Regardless, I really enjoyed this article on quilt and sewing themed tattoos. Did you know there’s such a thing as tattoo design etiquette? (I didn’t!)

    Chez Bonjour…

Here’s a couple of scenes I captured during the week. The waves picked up considerably after this photo was taken.

Steel steps leading down to the sandy beack at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. A beautiful winter's day, and yes, you can definitely swim in the ocean in winter here on the Sunshine Coast!

Even though it’s winter, the grevillea trees are in bloom and they are a treat. Native birds love them, so we often see rosellas and lorikeets hanging off the flower heads.

    Cats’ Corner

And it wouldn’t be a Bonjour Newsletter if I didn’t close with some shots of our two Burmese cats, Tigger (orange) and Lulu (brown). We have been bestowed with many snuggles in this cooler weather and we’re loving it.

    Have a great weekend

That’s it from me, I’m heading back to my sewing table to work on clearing those Bear Paw blocks. I really want to get back to my citron/teal quilt again. Too many quilts, a lovely problem to have! Stay safe and try and fit in a little sewing if you can – you won’t regret it.

    Until next time,

    Kirsty x

      1. So much beauty! The quilts of course such great color choices! Love to send you some our our summer heat, I’m sure the kitties would love it. I’m picturing a quilt designed by you about the path to the beach. Looks so inviting – I rememeber taking old quilts to the beach when it got colder just to make the season last a little longer.
