I’m happy to introduce you to my latest quilt pattern, called Gemology!
This pattern is FQ friendly, as I am really trying to reclaim my linen cupboard and reduce my stash.
The Gemology quilt pattern is for a lap/throw size quilt, finishing at approximately 54″ x 70″.
The tumbling gemstone shapes are made with HSTs and half rectangle triangles (HRTs). If you’re looking for a useful block that lets you create lots of designs, then you’ll love the HRT.
The HRTs in this pattern are 3:1 ratio and can be easily trimmed with a 12.5″ square ruler (instructions for this, with photos, are included).
I used a FQ bundle of Alison Glass’ Chroma to create this quilt. You can find some lovely Alison Glass rainbow FQ bundles here on Etsy*!
The background fabric is also from the Chroma line. I love the small, dispersed print on the fabric – it gives it some interest without being too busy.
I used Alison Glass Chroma for the binding too, in a lovely charcoal. However, if you prefer a bright, scrappy binding there is definitely enough left over from the gem fat quarters to create one.

Next up, I’m planning on making a blue version. Or maybe a blue and grey version – I haven’t quite made up my mind yet. I played around with my blocks a little and made both top and bottom of the gems from the same fabric.
I’m not sure if I will put 3 gems of the same fabric across each row, or mix them up for a more scrappy look. I’ll be sure to show you what I come up with.

Lovely quilt. I see the gems…to be sure…but I see that this shape could also lend itself to a “kitetology” quilt.
Oh, absolutely! Naming quilts is probably the part I find the most difficult, so it’s ironic that 2 names jumped out easily for this one!
