Let it be said from the outset that I’m not a trendy person. In Australia an untrendy person is often referred to as a dag, and I’m happy to be daggy. (I think most of us spent 2020-2021 being very daggy as we schlepped around our homes.)
But 2022 approaches and brings with it the promise of a better year (please, please, please). So let’s shake off our dagginess and check out the colour trends for 2022!
Pantone Colour of the Year 2022: Very Peri
Very Peri is Pantone’s 2022 Colour of the Year. I’m sure Peri refers to periwinkle and not peri-menopause, which is a pity. I am indeed Very Peri.
Were you surprised it was purple? I was! We just had Ultra Violet as the Colour of the Year in 2018! And Radiant Orchid in 2014. I think the purple cartel has infiltrated Pantone’s committee.
I’m not a huge fan of purple but I do prefer those heavy on the blue, such as Very Peri (as opposed to the rosier Radiant Orchid). So if it has to be purple, I guess I can handle this one.
I’ve only sewn a couple of purple quilts. There was this baby quilt (blog post here) made from my Fleur mini quilt pattern:

Best of all, you'll be the first to hear about new patterns, tutorials, sales and more.
I also sewed a twin size Diamonds in the Deep quilt for my second youngest son (purple’s his favourite):
I worked some purple into this Zed quilt, which I made for my niece:
I also made her a matching cushion using the Stash Magnet quilt block:
Trying to Love Very Peri Fabric
In an attempt to bond with purple I’ve pulled all the Very Peri fabrics from my stash.
I was originally going to make an inverted Stash Knockout quilt (with the purple as the background colour) but changed my mind at the last moment.
This one is still in progress, but I’m enjoying these fabrics a lot more in a group than when taken individually.
Very Peri Fabric
If you’re looking to add to your collection of Very Peri fabric, I think Alison Glass does purple very well (seen here at the Fat Quarter Shop* or on Etsy here and here*).
I also think of Tula Pink whenever I think of purple (seen here at the Fat Quarter Shop* or on Etsy here).
If you have any Very Peri fabric favourites, please do leave them in the comments!
Very Peri Fabric Colour Palettes
You could also add some accent colours to your Very Peri fabric choices. I test drove some colour combinations using my Scrappy Cross block (you can find the tutorial for this block over here).
A nice mossy green comes to mind straight away – I’m thinking of flowering heather.
As Very Peri is a blue-based purple it will pair nicely with other blues (I love navy, especially):
Perhaps with some lavender, as the white is a bit stark:
Hmm, maybe bring the white back again:
Pantone are recommending some light gold:
And also with some earthy brown:
What do you recommend as an accompaniment to Very Peri?
Kona Cotton Solids Colour of the Year 2022: Cosmos
The Kona Cotton Solids Colour of the Year is –drumroll– Cosmos! Hmm, what colour exactly is Cosmos? Must be an inky black, reminiscent of deep space?
Oh.
Really?
*deep sigh*
More purple.
It’s certainly very rich and vibrant. When purple meets fuchsia. I suppose I can love this.
And hey, Kona Cosmos looks great with Very Peri! This combo really packs a punch.
What about this party version? That white cross is working hard to keep those two under control!
Etsy Colour of the Year 2022: Emerald Green
YAY!! I love me some green!
Etsy also likes to predict the trends and I imagine they have a lot of data at their fingertips. I hope they’re right about this one.
I made an emerald green version of the Up and Away quilt earlier this year:
And I also made this green quilt in 2017 (when Pantone’s Colour of the Year was Greenery):
There’s also quite a bit of green in this version of the In The Stars quilt pattern:
2022: A Colourful Year for Sure
Here’s hoping 2022 will be full of good news for all of us. A maybe some Very Peri fabric!
Please take care and I’ll see you on the other side of the New Year!
Cheers,
Kirsty
P.S. The trends must be right as Her Majesty is never wrong!

I wouldn’t say I was a purple lover, I have none in my wardrobe or home decoration however my garden is FULL of it. Flowers of every shade! Must be because it goes so well with green and that is a fav of mine.
Yes, nature seems to love purple. It’s a good place to find inspiration!
Thanks for collecting all these colour predictions together and finding ways to use them. Purple isn’t my favourite colour, there’s not even a little dot of purple in my wardrobe but maybe it’s good to accept a challenge and try new colour combinations?
I definitely agree, Allison – it’s good to get a push out of the comfort zone every now and then. I’m even starting to like Very Peri, although I will never wear it (with red hair it would just be too much!). Happy New Year!
I love your color ideas! Even when the colors of the year are not your favorites.
Especially like the Very Peri with the kiwi green. How about a very red accent?
Also love the Very Peri with the light gold. Regal looking! Subtle, beautiful.
May your “peri” be easy and uncomplicated!❤️ I am post-peri myself. ?
Post-peri…that sounds awesome ?. I’m coming around to Very Peri the more I work with it. Perhaps I’ll love it by the end of 2022?!
Isn’t it about time you’d choose a Color of the Year? For all of us? Everyone seams to do that now, I mean Etsy too?
I love purple but not every purple
I do love all greens
Purple + green we’re the colors of the Suffragettes! Powerful combi!
I’d love to choose the Colour of the Year but you’d probably all get bored of me choosing blue every year! Maybe with a bit of green every now and then. ?
Not sure about all the purple however I agree Tula does do a good purple. Onwards and upwards to 2022. Love reading your blog
It’ll grow on you, Helen. I promise ?
The purples are old lady colours. I am not there yet.
Just dip your toe in, Amanda. I little HST here, a couple of stripes there. Don’t jump in head first if it’s giving you the shivers ?
Okay if you’re in I’m in but I was just getting to love the Garden Party Rose shades with evergreen and mint. but “as goes The Queen, so goes the Nation.” Maybe I could try wearing a hat as well!
Everything’s more fun with a hat on ?
Honestly I think Pantone and Kona are in cahoots. Every year their colors work well with each other. Add in Etsy and Peri, Cosmos and Emerald make me think spring violets.
And yes, apparently the Queen is never wrong when it comes to color.
Yes, the 3 colours work quite well together really. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some collusion there, somewhere!
I am not a purple person either so I don’t know that I will jump on the Pantone or Kona bandwagon this year. On the other hand I did plan on making a double Irish chain quilt this year so I am sure Kelly Green will come into play. I am very interested in your new jelly roll quilt pattern that you gave us a peek of. ?
Kelly Green is lovely, for sure. Not sure if the new pattern will be out next month or not til March…I’m doing my 2022 schedule this week. Happy sewing!
I just love this blog today with your test drive. But the real attest to color trends IS THE QUEEN! You are so right! So let’s color 2022 bright and colorful. Let’s be regal and follow the color trends of the Queen. Have healthy, Peri, Emerald 2022 with a sprinkle of Cosmos!
Yes, the Queen is great at choosing all the bright and bold trends.
